Catherine leads a variety of different composition sessions focusing on:
- exploring pitch, modes, scales and key
- song writing
- rhythm and ostinato patterns
- melody and phrase structure
- musical form and structure including, binary, ternary, rondo, canon...

Composition sessions are often linked with Musical Notation & Graphic Scores sessions and Music History & Appreciation topics as a way of focusing work and strengthening understanding.

Catherine is experienced in enabling children to express their musical ideas through a diverse range of notational methods, including traditional Western Notation.
Notation and score sessions help develop pupils ability to communicate and interpret effectively, and enables them to reflect, appraise, share ideas and improve their work.

Catherine regularly conducts an amateur orchestra for players of all abilities and is experienced in coaching and directing instrumental groups of all sizes (from 2 - 50 players) including:
- recorder groups
- orchestras
- wind bands
- percussion ensembles
- rock bands

Catherine is an experienced vocal coach and has worked with infants, children, young people, adults and the elderly.
Her work includes:
- vocal play / exploration sessions

- INSET and CPD training to develop confidence in singing and song-leading

Exploring music from different cultures and times, who played it and why. Catherine has studied and taught music from:
- Mediaeval, Rennaissance, Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods
